Escape to Whispering Bluffs Ranch & discover surrounding amm

Experience Chimney Rock National Monument

Stay at the Gateway to Ancient History

Our ranch isn’t just a place to park—it’s your front-row seat to one of the most sacred and spectacular landscapes in the American Southwest. Sharing a border with Chimney Rock National Monument, we offer a unique opportunity to camp in the shadow of 1,000 years of history.

Experience Chimney Rock National Monument

Located just minutes from your campsite, this high-mesa archaeological wonder was once a major ceremonial center for the Ancestral Puebloans (A.D. 900–1150).

  • The Twin Spires: Marvel at the iconic sandstone pillars—Chimney Rock and Companion Rock—that tower over the valley.
  • Ancient Architecture: Explore over 200 preserved structures, including a Great House Pueblo and pit houses, that remain sacred to modern-day tribes.
  • Celestial Wonders: Known worldwide for its archeoastronomy, the site was built to align with rare lunar events and solstices.
  • Incredible Hiking: Take the Great House Trail for a 360-degree view of the San Juan Mountains or enjoy the accessible Mesa Village Trail to see ancient kivas up close.

Your Basecamp for Discovery

After a day of exploring the monument’s trails and artifacts, return to the ranch to unwind.

A Moment to Linger: Bring your dinner to the hillside as the sun dips low. Watch the light fade over the monument's spires, enjoy the deer and elk migrations, and prepare for some of the best star gazing in Colorado.

Experience the history, the culture, and the quiet of the high mesa—right from your doorstep.

Relax at Pagosa Spring Hot Springs

Experience the World’s Deepest Hot Springs

When you stay at the ranch, you are just a 20-minute scenic drive from the town of Pagosa Springs, home to a natural wonder that holds the Guinness World Record for the Deepest Geothermal Hot Spring on Earth.

The "Mother Spring" is so deep that a plumb line of 1,002 feet failed to reach the bottom! Today, these mineral-rich waters feed three unique downtown resorts where you can soak, relax, and rejuvenate.

1. The Hot Springs:

The largest and most famous of the three, located right on the banks of the San Juan River.

  • 50+ Individual Pools: Ranging from a cool 83°F to the famous "Lobster Pot" at 114°F.
  • Riverside Views: Soak in terraced pools while watching fly-fishers or rafters float by.
  • Cold Plunge: After a hot soak, take a dip in the San Juan River or their dedicated cold plunge pool to reset your system.

2. Overlook Mineral Springs Spa

Perfect for those who want a view of the town’s historic charm.

  • Rooftop Tubs: Enjoy a soak while overlooking downtown Pagosa Springs and the surrounding mountains.
  • Victorian Ambiance: Features a classic, relaxed feel with indoor pools and private tub rooms for a more intimate experience.

3. Healing Waters Resort & Spa

A local favorite with a "down-home" western atmosphere.

  • Large Swimming Pool: Features a full-sized outdoor mineral water pool and a large outdoor hot tub.
  • No Frills, Just Minerals: Known for its concentrated mineral content and affordable day passes, it's a great spot for families and serious soakers.

A Day of "Peak to Pool"

Morning: Wake up to the silence of the high mesa and a sunrise view of Chimney Rock. Mid-Day: Ride the ranch's 20-acre arena or hike our private trails. Afternoon: Head into Pagosa for a long soak to soothe your muscles. Evening: Return to the ranch for star gazing that is truly second to none.

Ride the Rails: Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Ride the Rails: Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Take a journey back in time on the (about 45–50 minutes from the ranch) Official Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, located just a scenic drive from the ranch. Voted one of the "World’s Top Ten Train Rides," this historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive has been in continuous operation since 1882.

1. The Journey of a Lifetime

Experience the rugged beauty of the San Juan National Forest as you travel along the Animas River on tracks originally laid for silver and gold miners.

  • Breathtaking Canyon Views: Wind through narrow mountain passes and over high timber trestles that are inaccessible by car.
  • Historic Silverton: The train stops in the high-alpine mining town of Silverton, where you can explore historic Main Street, grab lunch at a local saloon, or shop for unique mountain treasures.
  • Vintage Comfort: Choose from open-air gondolas for 360-degree views or heated, enclosed vintage coaches for a classic feel.

2. Seasonal Excursions

The railroad offers different experiences depending on when you visit the ranch:

  • The Silverton Draw (Summer/Fall): The full 3.5-hour trip each way to the town of Silverton, offering the complete historic experience.

  • Special Events: From the Polar Express™ in the winter to the Great Pumpkin Patch in the fall, there is always a themed adventure on the tracks.

Navajo State Park

Navajo State Park in Arboles, CO, is often called "Colorado's answer to Lake Powell." It serves as the gateway to the 35-mile-long Navajo Reservoir, which straddles the border between Colorado and New Mexico.

Boating at Navajo State Park

The reservoir offers 15,000 surface acres of water (about 3,000 on the Colorado side) and is a premier destination for powerboats, sailboats, and personal watercraft.

  • Two Rivers Marina: Located at the park, this full-service marina provides:
    • Rentals: Pontoon boats (18–30 ft), fishing boats, and stand-up paddleboards.
    • Supplies: Fuel, ice, fishing tackle, boating accessories, and snacks.
    • Storage: Seasonal boat slips, mooring buoys, and dry storage are available.

  • Boat Ramp: The park features one of the longest ramps in Colorado, though it typically closes from December 1 to March 1 for the winter season.
  • Inspections: All motorized boats must pass an Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) inspection before launching. If your boat is registered in Colorado, you must also have an ANS Stamp.
  • Navigation: You can boat across the state line into New Mexico, but be aware that New Mexico’s boating regulations apply once you cross the border.

Fishing Information

Navajo Reservoir is known for both warm-water and cold-water fishing.

  • Top Species:
    • Northern Pike: Known for record-breaking sizes in this lake.
    • Smallmouth & Largemouth Bass: Found in the rocky coves and shorelines.
    • Crappie, Bluegill, & Catfish: Plentiful in the shallower, warmer waters.
    • Trout & Kokanee Salmon: Typically found in the deeper, cooler sections of the reservoir.
  • River Access: The park provides access to the San Juan and Piedra Rivers, which are excellent for shore fishing.
  • Licensing: * A Colorado Fishing License is required to fish on the Colorado side.
    • If you plan to cross the state line (which is not marked on the water), you must also possess a New Mexico Fishing License. Licenses for New Mexico are no longer sold at the Park Visitor Center and should be purchased online in advance.
